If you’ve always wanted to experience the magic of Garba, or if you just love dancing in community, then this 2-day workshop is for you!

Garba is an ancient folk dance performed by all in the community during the fall Navratri holiday celebrating the Mother Goddess Durga. Originating in the state of Gujarat in India, it is now enjoyed by the South Asian diaspora worldwide.

Join us for this two-part class series where @Shalinator teaches contemporary movement vocabulary and group dancing mechanics which will equip you to dance Garba confidently and enjoy the collective effervescence of any garba event you may be attending this fall, including the BSGT Navratri Garba!

Highly suggested: traditional Garba wear or anything colorful, comfortable and flowy, and a water bottle!

About the instructor:
Shalin began dancing Garba at the age of four at local Hindu and cultural events like many in the Gujarati community. As his appetite for dance grew he incorporated, with reverence, elements of many other genres into his aesthetic, including other South Asian folk styles, Bollywood, Jazz, Hip Hop, House dance, Flamenco and Afro-folkloric. He developed a passion for making dance accessible to others and began choreographing and teaching dance at the age of 18 in various contexts including collegiate competition productions as well as community dance performances and wedding dance choreography. His enthusiasm for teaching followed him into his professional life as a full-time academic Internal Medicine physician. Taking a holistic view of health, he seeks to offer Garba as a tool to promote personal and community well-being.

Ideal for ages 16 and older. Anyone below the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No prior experience required. The cost of the class is $15 each, or $25 for the entire series. All participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Proceeds will benefit BSGT.
